Simon McPherson (McP Director) was the lead author for this ground breaking State design policy, working in strategic collaboration with the GANSW team, through deep investigation of how policy can priorities design across all facets and contexts of the built environment.

Our work on Better Placed involved extensive research of national and international precedents for built environment policies, formulating the document structure and thematic focus areas, collaboration with the Government Architect and GANSW team, and content writing of the full document.
The Better Placed initiative was supported by a new Object in the NSW Planning Act, which promotes good design in the built environment.
Better Placed won the 2017 Australian Urban Design Award for Policies, Programs and Concepts – Large Scale. It set a new benchmark for effective, comprehensive urban policy in Australia.
McP also collaborated with the Government Architect NSW to develop an Integrated Design Guide and Regional Urban Design Guide, to support Better Placed.
